The 66th EIFF awards took place at the Filmhouse cinema on Saturday, with Mao Mao’s Here, Then and Penny Woolcock‘s One Mile Away among the films honoured.
Here, Then was declared Best International Feature Film by an illustrious jury, including actor Elliot Gould and independent producer Julietta Scheil.
Picking up the prestigious Michael Powell award for Best British Feature Film was director Penny Woolcock. The jury (led by Jim Broadbent) described One Mile Away, which tackles inner city gang culture in Birmingham, as ‘a brave and honest film tackling a huge problem with sensitivity and skill, not only charting the efforts to reconcile a community but also showing the great wealth of creativity that is part of that struggle.’
Andrea Riseborough and Brid Brennan were joint winners of the award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film, for their roles in James Marsh’s Shadow Dancer.
Winners in the shorts category included Brazilian director Rafael Urban for his short film 'Dinosaur Eggs in the Living Room', and British director Will Anderson for The Making of Longbird.
The jury said, ‘Every work we had the privilege to see brought something new and extraordinary to us and choosing the best was a difficult task.’
