'The Hunger Games' fights its way to UK box office number one

The Hunger Games has stormed to the summit of the UK box office.

The Jennifer Lawrence-starring dystopian action blockbuster surprised nobody by easily claiming the number one spot. The movie took almost £5 million on its opening weekend. the figure easily beats the original Twilight film, which took £2.5 million in 2008.

However, it has not matched the totals taken by the vampire sequels, which all took over £10 million on their openings. However, in the US the film broke records, taking $155 million.

The film pushes last week’s number one The Devil Inside to number four, while 21 Jump Street and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel hold onto their positions in the top five.
The UK box office top ten is:
1. The Hunger Games - £4,900,177
2. 21 Jump Street - £1,184,044
3. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - £747,122
4. The Devil Inside - £643,036
5. We Bought A Zoo - £408,821
6. Contraband - £315,666
7. John Carter - £297,762
8. Act Of Valour - £262,935
